Persepolis: Study Guide
1) The book suggests that that stories shape and define Satrapi's experience, because she learns about what is going on around her. She also learns what she must face in life and she has to become a strong individual to go through the revolution. These stories shape her, because she learns about her family and her past. The story of Uncle Anoosh, helps her understand her uncle more. She was amazed that there was a hero in her family. This story informed her more about the past and what he had to go through. She wanted to become involved after the story of her uncle. The stories she heard shaped her to be able to tell her own story.
2) I agree with the L.A. Times that "Satrapi has grown into her youthful dream of prophethood, bcause as a child she wnated to become a prophet to help people. She lost her faith, because of all the negative things that were going on around her. Although she lost her faith, when she went through some dificulties in life and saw how life was unfair, she did what she could to be envolved to make a differance. She stood up for what she believed in. She became a strong and educated young girl who was involved with what was going on in her country.
3) The book suggests that the social classes in Iranian cultural is very strict. You can not move up classes. You must marry from the class you are from. There are bounderies for each class. The maid could not marry anyone outside her class. Even though the young boy fell in love with the maid, he changed his mind once he realized she was a maid. The society class came between love. Also during the revolution young boys had to go to the army. Mainly the lower class boys were the first to go. They were not even the right to stay home. because of how young they were.
